Refraction
Refraction is used to determine your glasses prescription. This usually includes testing with a phoroptor, where the doctor or technician will present different lenses and ask you to choose the clearer ones. The doctor or technician will use an instrument called an auto refractor and /or perform retinoscopy to obtain an objective measurement of your vision. Your previous prescription, the balance between the two eyes, and your visual needs will all be considered. This procedure may not be preformed on every patient. Refraction is done when a patient would like a new prescription for glasses or contact lenses, or if the vision has changed significantly from a previous exam.
Medicare and most insurance companies do not cover the cost of refractions. They only cover the portion of the exam related to medical conditions, and that does not include the need for glasses.
A refraction in our office is $30.00, which is payable by the patient, this payment is in addition to any amount billed to your insurance for medical care.
